Again, and again research shows that we are most effective when we have a positive attitude. When we are in a good mood, we think more clearly, our solutions are broader and all encompassing, our ability to engage meaningfully with other people is much higher.
That doesn’t mean that it’s easy to always be in a good mood. As many things throughout the day may affect us and challenge our frame of mind. So, while we are learning to remain more centered no matter what comes at us, here are 10 good mood hacks that you can tap into to INSTANTLY shift your mood back to a place where it best serves your greatest joy and Success, #BossLady style.
This amazing and simple tool brings us back to present moment in just 3 rounds. You will find that, in present moment, you have your perspective back and can approach things differently. Here are the steps for SSBB:
- STOP: As soon as you notice that you are out of sorts and you need to shift gear, just stop whatever you are doing, saying or thinking, and say ‘Stop.’
- SMILE: Then put on the fullest, broadest smile that you can. Be as fake as you need to be, just plain grin from ear to ear!
- BREATHE: While still smiling, inhale long and slow through your nose.
- BE: Now, gently release the smile, and breathe out through your mouth, slowly.
- Repeat two more times, so that you have completed three rounds. Check in with yourself, and you will find that you are back to your center!

2. GIVE A COMPLIMENT
Look around you and find someone or something to compliment, out loud. Flesh the compliment out. ‘You look beautiful in red’ can be fleshed out to, ‘You look beautiful in red. I love how you always put effort into matching your outfit with the right shoes and accessories.’
Find two more people or things to compliment. ‘Have you noticed how blue the sky is today, it’s as if it’s trying to motivate us from above!’
Research shows that giving compliments boosts your self-confidence and nourishes your self-esteem.
3. Power Pose.
This instant shifter not only get you into a good mood, but also give you an amazing confidence boost.
- Stand with your feet hip distance apart, and place your hands on your hips, face forwards, shoulders straight.
- Keep your feet in the same position, now raise your hands high above you, about shoulder width apart, as if you are celebrating a great win. Yes!
- If you are sitting, raise both hands above you, and then place your elbows on the back of the chair, with arms outstretched to either side.
4. Laughter Medicine.
Laughter really is the best medicine. Did you know that there is even a practice called laughter yoga? Where the teacher leads the class in a series of fake laughter routines, which improves many aspects of health and wellbeing.
As an instant attitude shift, keep some really funny clips on your phone. When you need an instant lift, watch one of your guaranteed-to-laugh go to clips. Laughter releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones that you just can’t stay down with.
5. Count your Blessings.
Either write down, or count on your fingers, ten things that you are grateful for right now. You can even resort to the simplest thing like being grateful that you are healthy enough to be able to breathe in and out, whenever you like.
The Forbes.com article, ‘Scientific benefits of gratitude’ shows that consistent gratitude builds better relationships, reduces pain and improves health, increases happiness and reduces depression, enhances empathy and reduces aggression, improves sleep, improves self-esteem, and improves mental strength, so take some moments to be grateful.
6. Get physical.
For an Instant Attitude Shift, take a rush-walk around the block, or charge up and down the stairs, or if you have no stairs do 5 jumping jacks in a row.
Helpguide.org shares that aerobic movement like this boosts serotonin, endorphins and other chemicals that have a calming, anti-depressive effect.
7. Hand over Prayer.
I cannot remember who shared this prayer with me, but I have been using it for years, and it always creates profound peace of mind and instant joy.
I will use the term ‘Great Divine’, in my prayer below, you can use God, Allah, Infinite Wisdom as feels most right to you.
‘Great Divine, I can see that my current perspective does not serve Highest Good. I can see that because I feel (add words that describe your out-of-sorts feelings – sad, irritable, grumpy, frustrated etc.’) I am willing to change my perspective. I am willing to change my perspective to one that serves Highest Good. I hand this all over to you, and I ask for a miracle. A miracle without restrictions, a miracle without reserve. Thank you, thank you, thank you!’
Prayer has many therapeutic benefits like reducing anger, building trust, allowing forgiveness. This particular prayer is so specific in your intention to shift your attitude. I have seen so many miracles take place after handing a situation over to Great Divine. If you are very attached to the situation, it may take a couple of rounds.
8. Pump up the volume.
Music is a powerful mood shifter, both upwards and downwards depending on the song and the memories that you have attached to it. So, create a playlist of your ultimate good mood songs. When you need a good mood boost, pop on your headphones and pump up the volume.
9. I AM affirmations.
Affirmations are wonderful tools to shift a bad habit or a limiting belief. Use a positive I AM affirmation to instantly shift your attitude. Here are some suggestions:
‘I AM feeling so much better right now.’
‘I AM forcing the giggles to stay under control’
‘I AM a wonderful, amazing, gorgeous, abundant woman filled with love and light.’
Your less than glam mood is a perspective that your mind has chosen to adopt, and positive affirmations will help your mind to make a different, more useful choice.
10. Random acts of generosity.
Take a R10 note and leave it in a public place for someone else to find. You can even leave a little sticky ‘love’ note with the R10.
This fun activity helps to shift your gear two-fold. Firstly, there’s a certain adrenaline rush trying to do this without being seen. Secondly, research shows that giving to others actually makes you feel better than giving to yourself!
As with everything, practice makes perfect. It takes some self discipline to notice and then choose to shift out of downward-spiral mode, but it’s worth it. So, the more times that you catch yourself early on, the more easy it is to shift into a place that supports your joy and success!
